The experiences of eight local women who have helped in the battle to eliminate racism and worked to empower other women will be honored at a banquet Wednesday, March 1, in the Solomon P. Ortiz International Center. The YWCA’s annual Y Women in Careers award is designed to celebrate successful career women, something it has been doing for 37 years in Corpus Christi.
“Recognizing these deserving women is a special privilege for YWCA as well as fulfilling our mission of empowering women,” said Nancy Wesson-Dodd, YWCA president and CEO. “Y Women in Careers is a vital way to show women and young girls what women can accomplish, helping them to set goals for their own lives.”
Since 1979, YWCA has honored 268 exceptional honorees who stand out in their career fields through this award. Nominations come from across the community and are reviewed by leaders who remain anonymous.
“Highlighting and recognizing hard work, determination and decision-making is vital to the business community,” Wesson-Dodd said. “These honorees play crucial roles in our community, and recognizing them draws attention to the possibilities for women and girls.”
Being honored this year are:
- Maria Rodriguez Casas, superintendent of schools at Brooks County Independent School District;
- Rosie Gonzalez Collin, director of Community Relations for the Port of Corpus Christi; • Lori Dellinger, market president at Frost Bank;
- Vienna J Flores, president/CEO of Tukasa Creations;
- Dolores Guerrero, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University-Kingsville;
- Kelly Isaacks, commander of the Corpus Christi Police Department;
- Amy Aldridge Sanford, associate vice president of Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi;
- and Darcy Schroeder, public affairs manager for Valero Bill Greehey Refinery.
The event not only recognizes the accomplishments of local career women but also helps raise money to inspire and educate young women in the community.
“We hope the whole Corpus Christi community will come out and recognize the accomplishments of these talented professional women,” Wesson-Dodd said.
