Free classes to teach carpentry earned Del Mar College a Governor’s Volunteer Award. The classes were set up in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey as a way to provide more skilled workers for rebuilding efforts in the Coastal Bend. Del Mar was one of 12 recipients.

The Higher Education Community Impact Award was given to Del Mar for its free Rebuild Texas Carpentry Skills Training Program.

“This unique 10-week program was created to address the Coastal Bend region’s immense housing loss and growing unemployment numbers with a practical and versatile solution rooted in community service,” reads a media release from the governor’s office.

Texas first lady Cecilia Abbott served as honorary chair of the awards.

“The irrepressible spirit of service shines brightly in Texas,” she said. “I am honored to celebrate the extraordinary generosity of these 12 outstanding awardees, who have found selfless and compassionate solutions to strengthen their communities.”

The governor’s office worked in conjunction with the OneStar Foundation, which was created to support the state by strengthening its nonprofit sector. OneStar Foundation is designated as the National Service Commission in Texas by the governor.
