The red light traffic cameras are down, and if you got a ticket from one of them and haven’t paid it yet … well, don’t worry. You no longer have to. The Corpus Christi Police Department has waived all fines from red light traffic cameras, which came down April 26 after the City Council decided not to renew its contract with REDFLEX.
REDFLEX installed the cameras in 2007 under a 10-year contract. When it came time to renew earlier this year, Police Chief Mike Markle recommended doing away with the program altogether. He said that although the number of traffic accidents has gone down, the decrease is not enough to make a difference.
“My recommendation after review is that we do not renew this program, that we cut ties and move on,” he told the council Feb. 14. “We’ve had some wins, some single-digit decreases, but when you have this volume of vehicles passing through intersections and you’re moving numbers by single digits, you’re not really improving much.”
It’s truly a time to celebrate for those still owing money on their red light tickets. Before the waiver, unpaid fines could hold up vehicle registration. Also, that’s $75 impatient drivers will now get to keep.
