Greg Smith withdrew from his bid for re-election to the District 4 position on the Corpus Christi City Council two days before names were drawn for position on the ballots. All eight City Council members and the mayor are up for election in the Nov. 8. mid-terms.

Names were drawn for placement on Monday, Aug. 29. Smith withdrew on Friday, Aug. 26.

Smith, whose district includes Flour Bluff and North Padre Island, is completing his third, two-year term on the council.

His decision after initially filing paperwork for re-election leaves the race to Dan Suckley, the only other candidate to file for the District 4 seat. Suckley, a senior lending officer with American Bank, has served on the Flour Bluff Independent School District Board of Trustees, and is a member of the Visit Corpus Christi Board of Directors.

Smith told reporters he decided to withdraw because of the time commitment of running a campaign, serving in office, and managing two businesses while trying to open time with a growing number of grandchildren.

Smith is the second councilor not to seek re-election. Earlier this year, District 2 representative Ben Molina decided not to file for another term. Three people are vying for the District 2 spot, including former council member Mark Scott. Also on the ballot are Sylvia Campos and Brians Rosas.
