View Contemporary Art While Shopping at La Palmera
Shop till you drop — and see drop-dead gorgeous art while you’re at it. A new partnership between La Palmera and K Space Contemporary is turning the 1-million-square-foot mall into a massive art gallery, an extension of the K Space gallery in downtown Corpus Christi.
Starting this spring, shoppers at La Palmera will see large-scale art installations throughout the mall. The first installation will be on display in April in honor of Contemporary Art Month. Installations will change and continue throughout the year.
Formed in 1995, K Space Contemporary is the oldest alternative art space in the Coastal Bend. The gallery presents contemporary, experimental, non-commercial art and supports the artists behind the works.
The people behind the scenes at La Palmera have wanted to create a partnership with K Space for some time, according to Fred Walters, La Palmera vice president and general manager. He believes La Palmera is the perfect venue for art exhibits and events.
“Artists will gain the exposure they desire and need while our millions of shoppers gain an appreciation of art and find yet another reason to visit,” Walters said.
La Palmera will also host K Space Contemporary Summer Mural Art Camps during which students will create permanent, large-scale interior murals for shoppers to enjoy.
K Space promotes and expands public art across the city. The nonprofit has a mural arts program, putting up two or three murals a year. The most recent mural was painted for ChicasRock, a music program for young girls. K Space is also behind several of the most recognizable murals in downtown Corpus Christi.
K Space Contemporary is located at 415 D Starr St. For more information, call (361) 887-6834 or visit kspacecontemporary.org. La Palmera is located at 5488 South Padre Island Drive. For more information, visit lapalmera.com
