Christmas takes the stage in Corpus Christi

Three different companies present their version of “The Nutcracker,” while two local community theaters turn to different classics to celebrate the holidays. Harbor Playhouse presents the musical version of “A Christmas Carol,” while Aurora Arts Theatre sings and dances its way through “A Christmas Story.” Both are Broadway favorites.

The Harbor Playhouse brings Scrooge and the three ghosts of Christmas to life through song and dance in its version of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol.” The musical is written by Alan Menken, who also wrote the award-winning music to Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tangled.”

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 17-Dec. 17.

Tickets are $18 for adults; $15 for military members, seniors 65 and older and students; and $10 for ages 13 and younger. Group rates are available.

Another holiday musical, “A Christmas Story,” opens at the Aurora Arts Theatre on Nov. 17. The Broadway run received rave reviews. It is based on a popular movie that runs around the clock on TV during the holiday season. All you need to say is, “You’ll shoot your eye out,” and everyone will know which movie you’re talking about!

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 17-Dec. 31. Tickets are $16 each.

The Corpus Christi Concert Ballet performs its rendition of ”The Nutcracker” in the Selena Auditorium at the American Bank Center on Nov. 25-26. Saturday’s performance is at 7:30 p.m., while the Sunday performance is at 2 p.m.

The ensemble includes students from the Ballet Academy, the official school of the Concert Ballet.

Corpus Christi Ballet will stage four performances of “The Nutcracker,” also in the Selena Auditorium at the American Bank Center. Family Weekend performances are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. On Gala Weekend, the ballet is joined by the Corpus Christi Ballet Orchestra for performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17.

Tickets for Family Weekend are $17 for orchestra seats, $12 for grand tier seats and $7 for balcony seats. Gala Weekend tickets, which include live music with the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, are $32 for orchestra, $22 for grand tier and $12 for balcony. Tickets for seniors/military members and students are available for Gala Weekend for $27 for orchestra, $17 for grand tier and $10 for balcony.

The company will also perform a selection from “The Nutcracker” for patrons of the Ben. F. McDonald Public Library, 4044 Greenwood Drive, from 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11. Unlike at a full performance, photographs are allowed!

For a completely different take on the classic, see the one and only performance of “The Great Russian Nutcracker” on its 25th anniversary tour, straight from Moscow. Performance features larger-than-life puppets, a 60-foot growing Christmas tree, nesting dolls and handcrafted costumes.
