At just 13, Denise Miller started making her own way.

Growing up in an era when many — including her father — believed women should not work or go to school, Miller was determined to do just that. She ironed shirts on Saturdays and walked bulldogs on Sundays, eventually earning enough money and financial scholarships to attend beauty school.

“I’ve always looked at the bottom line,” Miller said of the challenges in her life. “If something was logically worth the outcome, I did it.”

Through her strong work ethic, Miller has indeed achieved success. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1951 and has owned Denise’s Salon for 53 years. She also opened the city’s first massage school and taught numerous cosmetology and massage classes. She hosted the radio show “Guess What I Heard at the Beauty Salon” and has earned the highest credentials for the beauty and massage industries worldwide.

Miller manages four lines of cosmetics and shampoos. She also has created a men’s skincare line and a line of body wraps.

When asked which professional accomplishment she is most proud of, Miller said, “Being a creative teacher of the arts and making a difference in students’ lives.”

After 53 years, Miller still works 70 hours a week. Her knowledge and rapport with clients have made her a pillar of the city’s beauty industry.

Along with her professional affiliations, Miller is dedicated to community involvement. She is active in her church, acting as the special events director. For the past 31 years, she also has organized donations from local businesses for veterans living in Corpus Christi.

Miller is quick to point out what makes Corpus Christi special to her.

“I have fantastic clients that have given me a great life,” she said.

Forever young, the 81-year-old continues to be motivated by her morals, joy, family and the pursuit of knowledge.
